Tanzania Ngorongoro Peaberry

from $19.00

Notes: Chamomile, Ginger, Orange Blossom, Red JuJubes, Swiss Meringue

Process: Washed and dried on raised beds

Varietal: Kent, Bourbon, SL-28, Ruiru-11

Grown and processed by the Vahara siblings at Gaia Farm. Gaia Farm is situated along the Ngorongoro Crater - the largest unbroken caldera in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Vahara siblings put a lot of effort into farming practices that protect the natural beauty and diversity of the land; they have recently started planting crops that will help naturally regulate nitrogen in the soils. The care they put into this land is evident in their coffees. This one is very smooth and very sweet, with flavors that remind us of chamomile, ginger, orange blossom, red Jujubes, and Swiss meringue.

Peaberry is a genetic mutation that occurs in about 5-10% of coffee cherries. This mutation results in the cherry growing one seed instead of two. Peaberry beans are small, round, and dense. The single seed getting all the nutrients results in a much higher concentration of flavour, meaning peaberries are really vibrant. A lot of extra work goes into these coffees as they have to be sorted out by hand at origin.
